Is A Miniature Schnauzer Right For you?

Miniature Schnauzers are intelligent and lively dogs.  They are adaptable and easy to train and are suitable for first time dog owners who are prepared to invest time and effort into training.

Pros:

-Intelligent.  Schnuazers pick up on commands and routines very quickly making them easy to train.  Most are highly food motivated making them easy to train with reward based training methods.

-Easy to house train. Most Miniature Schnauzers are easy to house train provided the owner is consistent with ensuring the dog has sufficient opportunites to relive themselves outside.

-Low shedding.  Miniature Schnauzers would be considered a low shedding breed, however they are NOT low grooming.  They require weekly brushing and professional grooming every 6-8 weeks.

-This is a medium exercise level breed of dog.  An adult dog can easily keep up on a hike or on a run.

-The breed is playful, friendly, and does well with children provided the child has been taught to respect the dog.  They are a sturdy dog that enjoys exploring.

-Overall the breed is quite healthy.  Joint disorders are rare in the breed.  They are prone to eye disorders (which we test for though eye exams and genetic testing), pancreatitis (this is manged through proper diet) and dental issues.

Cons:

-Miniature Schnauzers require consitent training.  They are very intelligent and will take advantage of a situation if given the opportunity.  They can be stuborn.

-They can be "yappy" or barkers if not trained appropriately.  They are easily trained not to bark but this training must be consistent.

-They will roam.  If given to opportunity most Miniature Schnauzers will take themselves on an adventure.  For this reason, training a stong recall and having a secure fence is highly recommended.  They can be trusted off leash but need to be trained to recall before ever attempting this.

-They require weekly grooming at home as well as professional grooming every 6-8 weeks.  This is a perpetual cost which must be budgeted for when considering this breed.

-They will likely need professional teeth cleaning done by a veterinarian every 2-3 years as they age, usually commencing around the age of 4-5.  Many Miniature Schnauzers are prone to bad teeth.  This is not a genetic issue but a breed pre-disposition.  Budgeting for dental cleaning or maintaing a pet insurance policy that covers dental work is recommended and can be an added cost to having this breed.
